- Description of event
Ngawang Gyaltsen, who was detained on Feb. 24, 2015 in Sog (Ch: Suo) county in the Nagchu (Ch: Naqu) prefecture of the Tibet Autonomous Region, was released on March 7. The detention was reportedly political; Ngawang Gyaltsen had been a Shag Rongpo monk who was "forced to withdraw from the monastery and live as a layperson" because he had "occasionally confronted" officials conducting "patriotic education" at the monastery. After the apparent expulsion ; police had subjected him to monitoring as well as restrictions on his movements and contacts. He passed away at 61 in February 2022
