Kelsang Cheron was formally arrested on 18 October 2008, in Chone: (Ch: Zhuoni), Gansu Province located in the southeast of (Ch: Gannan) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, for the crime he is accused of having committed 11 years ago during the Tibetan protests that began on 17 March 2008. Later he was transferred to the procuratorate for prosecution on 7 January 2020. he was accused of organizing the protest in Chone: (Ch: Zhuoni), Gansu Province, and convening a secret meeting on 17 March with over 60 Tibetan monks about smashing the public security bureau and county government office. And allegedly waving the Snow Lion flags and chanting slogans about independence.

Many of these Tibetan demonstrators are said to have served out their prison terms by this point, but Kelsang Tsering's whereabouts are still unknown. Kelsang Tsering is probably still imprisoned today.
